Seabourn
A private yacht feel, with none of the pretension that phrase usually implies.
I have not sailed Seabourn myself, but my clients have, on the Seabourn Ovation in the Caribbean and the Pursuit in Antarctica, and what they describe every time is a private yacht-like feel. What stands out most is what they are not. The experience on board is not stuffy or pretentious, but rather warm and welcoming, with a guest list that tends to share a love of travel and of learning, the kind of people you actually want to be seated next to at dinner.
Why does that matter to you? Because plenty of small ship lines promise an intimate feel and do not fully deliver it. What my clients describe on Seabourn is the real thing, not a marketing phrase.
Seabourn's signature moments come up again and again in what my clients tell me: Marina Day, Caviar in the Surf, Caviar on the Ice, and the Polar Plunge. These are not throwaway extras. They are the kind of details that turn a good cruise into one you talk about for years.
For polar travel specifically, Seabourn operates purpose-built icebreakers, which matters more than it sounds like it should. My clients who sailed the Pursuit in Antarctica talk about the amount of time they spent on land, walking among the penguins who barely noticed they were there, and one especially quiet moment watching a whale asleep on the surface of the water while out in a kayak. At a glance, Seabourn can look like many of the other small ship lines. Once you are on board, the experience is clearly its own.
One client sailing the Ovation this coming winter is bringing her adult granddaughter, continuing a tradition of grandmother-granddaughter trips the two of them have kept up since her granddaughter was young. They chose Seabourn for a specific itinerary through the smaller Leeward Islands, and while both have cruised before, this will be their first time on Seabourn together. They are especially looking forward to Marina Day and Caviar in the Surf, both scheduled on their sailing, and to adding one more chapter to a tradition that already means a great deal to them.
